چکیده

Ecological processes act upon landscapes over a wide range of temporal and spatial extents. These processes interact to create complex and ever-changing landscape patterns. While remote sensing data (e.g. AVHRR, TM) has often been used to characterize such heterogeneity at the landscape scale, these sensors cannot resolve spatial pattern to the detail required for finer scale analyses, such as the linking of biogeochemical cycles to communitylevel processes (e.g. patch formation). In such cases, it is often necessary to sample heterogeneity in situ. However, because data collection and analysis methods are generally designed to meet certain statistical criteria and perform with certain statistical properties, the sampling techniques used to characterize spatio-temporal heterogeneity will strongly influence perceived landscape structure. If the assumptions that an investigator makes about the sampled landscape are untrue, then the resultant characterization of landscape structure is likely to be misleading. In this study, we use three examples to highlight this potential problem. More specifically, we compare geostatistics and nested random-effects ANOVA for characterizing landscape heterogeneity under conditions where the landscape homogeneity assumptions on which geostatistics are based are violated, and where sampling budget is limited. We simulate a variety of landscapes whose statistical structures are known, and analyze the spatial structures estimated by geostatistics and nested ANOVA. Our results indicate that for all simulated conditions, nested design provides a more stable and rigorous characterization of structure than that provided by geostatistics. Furthermore, the statistical properties of the nested ANOVA design allow testing for significant differences in patchiness between spatial resolutions.

A comparison of nested analysis of variance (ANOVA) and variograms for characterizing grassland spatial structure under a limited sampling budget

It is often necessary to estimate fine-scale grassland heterogeneity in situ using ground-based spectral radiometers. However, the sampling techniques used to describe spatiotemporal heterogeneity will strongly influence perceived landscape structure. We hypothesize that nested sampling schemes based on random-effects analysis of variance (ANOVA) will provide a more reliable characterization of...

Assessment of Spatial Structure of Groundwater Quality Variables Based on the Geostatistical Simulation

Our main objective in the present study was to assess the spatial variation of chemical and physical water properties. Prior to the design of groundwater quality monitoring networks, it is essential to investigate the spatial structure of the groundwater quality variables. A case study is presented which used ground water quality observations from groundwater domestic wells in the Dameghan, Ira...

Assessment of soil property spatial variation based on the geostatistical simulation

The main objective in the present study was to assess the spatial variation of chemical and physical soil properties and then use this information to select an appropriate area to install a pasture rehabilitation experiment in the Zereshkin region, Iran. A regular 250 m grid was used for collecting a total of 150 soil samples (from 985 georeferenced soil pits) at 0 to 30, and 30 to 60 cm layers...

Spatial variability of forest growing stock using geostatistics in the Caspian region of Iran

Estimating the amount of variation due to spatial dependence at different scales provides a basis for designing effective experiments. Accurate knowledge of spatial structures is needed to inform silvicultural guidelines and management decisions for long term sustainability of forests. Furthermore, geostatistics is a useful tool to describe and draw map the spatial variability and estimation o...
